SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Science and improved technology are great ways to express human intelligence, and are valuable as organized approaches to develop knowledge and solve problems. The insights and skills that represent scientific accomplishment, however, must look to the force of spiritual awareness and moral principle to ensure their appropriate application. Dialogue between scientists and moralists can facilitate the standing of humanity within the bounds of nature throughout the world.

An intrapersonal relationship and self reflection of our use of science provides us with a sense of spirituality, self worth, personal growth, and so on. In short, it is what makes us conscious of and accountable for our own behavior and its consequences. It basically influences the way we think about things. When we become spiritually conscious the more other centered we become, the more self controlled our behavior is, and the greater our willingness to be personally accountable for the outcome of one's behavior with respect to the welfare of fellow citizens, present and future, and the Earth as a whole.

In addition to our relating science to our understanding of moral and spiritual issues, interdisciplinary scientific information (like that required to promote sustainable lifestyles) will not serve the public unless the knowledge gained can be communicated effectively to policymakers and stakeholders at all levels of the social and political spectrums" ..... We need "to improve the process of information dissemination, from scientist to citizen and vice versa" (National Science Foundation Workshop "Nature and Society" - June 2000).

National Council for Science and the Environment - The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) has been working since 1990 to improve the scientific basis for environmental decisionmaking. For its efforts, the Council has earned a reputation for objectivity, responsibility, and achievement. The Council believes that comprehensive and integrated science can help society achieve its environmental goals in the most effective manner, recognizing economic, social, and security implications. The Council ’s approach to science is embodied in the new phrase ‘sustainability science.’

Sustainable Development Solutions - By linking science, conservation, and socio-economic improvement programs on a global basis, Five E's national and international leadership in developing research, management, strategic planning, education, and policy recommendations toward achieving sound economic development and natural resource conservation goals has assisted governments, corporations, academic institutions, communities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for more than 8 years.

WorldWatch Institute: State of the World Annual Report - The Worldwatch Institute offers a unique blend of interdisciplinary research, global focus, and accessible writing that has made it a leading source of information on the interactions among key environmental, social, and economic trends. Its work revolves around the transition to an environmentally sustainable and socially just society—and how to achieve it.

Union of Concerned Scientists – Citizens and Scientists for Environmental Solutions. UCS is an independent nonprofit alliance of more than 100,000 concerned citizens and scientists. We augment rigorous scientific analysis with innovative thinking and committed citizen advocacy to build a cleaner, healthier environment and a safer world.

Pew Center on Global Climate Change - The scientific community has reached a strong consensus regarding the science of global climate change. The world is undoubtedly warming. This warming is largely the result of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities including industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion, and changes in land use, such as deforestation. Addressing climate change is no simple task. To protect ourselves, our economy, and our land from the adverse effects of climate change, we must ultimately dramatically reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. To achieve this goal we must fundamentally transform the way we power our global economy, shifting away from a century’s legacy of unrestrained fossil fuel use and its associated emissions in pursuit of more efficient and renewable sources of energy.

University of Texas Environmental Center - The Center is a resource for UT students interested in the environment. It works to help students learn about and get involved in environmental issues, to serve as a resource for student environmental organizations, and to reduce the University's environmental impact.

North American Association for Environmental Education - NAAEE is a network of professionals and students working throughout north America and 55 countries around the world The North American Association for Environmental Education - promoting a healthy, sustainable environment through education. NAAEE provides support for environmental education and educators through a variety of programs and activities.

Community-Based Social Marketing Information - Numerous initiatives to reduce waste and pollution, increase water and energy efficiency, and alter transportation patterns are first footholds in the transition to sustainability. This site was developed for the people who design these and other programs to foster sustainable behavior. Its purpose is simple: to provide information that can enhance the success of their efforts.

The Climate Campaign - The Climate Campaign is a collaborative effort of the Northeast's student environmental networks to make our schools and our states lead the way in the fight against global warming.

Environmental Working Group - Environmental investigations have been our specialty at the Environmental Working Group since 1993. Our team of scientists, engineers, policy experts, lawyers and computer programmers pores over government data, legal documents, scientific studies and our own laboratory tests to expose threats to your health and the environment, and to find solutions. Our research brings to light unsettling facts that you have a right to know. It shames and shakes up polluters and their lobbyists. It rattles politicians and shapes policy. It persuades bureaucracies to rethink science and strengthen regulation. It provides practical information you can use to protect your family and community.

Silent Spring Institute: Researching the Environment and Women's Health - SILENT SPRING INSTITUTE is a non-profit scientific research organization dedicated to identifying the links between the environment and women's health, especially breast cancer. The Institute is a groundbreaking collaboration of scientists, physicians, health advocates, and community activists, and a leading edge research institution using multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art approaches.

The Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) - BFI is committed to a successful and sustainable future for 100% of humanity. Founded in 1983 and inspired by the Design Science principles pioneered by the late Buckminster Fuller, BFI serves as an information resource for concerned citizens around the world. BFI believes that the success of the human experiment on-board Spaceship Earth depends greatly upon individuals having access to tools which empower them to see the big picture and take strategic action. The decisive challenge is to generate a critical mass of awareness, matched by cohesive effort, focused on implementing our option for success before it expires.

Environmental Protection and Jobs - A coalition of labor and environmental advocates are hailing the findings of this new report that clearly demonstrates how smarter environmental policies can lead to significant job creation. The report Smarter, Cleaner, Stronger: Secure Jobs, Clean Environment, and Less Foreign Oil details for the first time on a national and a state-by-state basis, the economic benefits that will result from energy policies that stimulate the development of clean energy technologies.
