FOOD

Issues of food nutrition are central to the challenge of providing an adequate standard of living for all members of the human family. This issue cannot, however, be tackled solely as a technical or economic problem. Eliminating hunger and malnutrition and establishing food security require a shift in values, a commitment to equity, and a corresponding reorientation of policies, goals and programs.

The Hunger Site - It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That's roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year. About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. This is down from 35,000 ten years ago, and 41,000 twenty years ago. Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five. Your click on the "Give Free Food" button funds food for the hungry, paid for by site sponsors whose ads appear after you click and provided to people in need around the world through the efforts of Mercy Corps and America's Second Harvest.

Sustainable Agriculture - Participants in the food system already provide environmental services, but the system must produce more in order to be truly sustainable. Through a continuous and iterative collaboration process with farm, food and voluntary organizations, Growing Green identified several dozen of the issues that deserve attention.

For The Love of Life - Maybe you have noticed that the foods we eat can make a huge difference to our health and to the health of the planet. Maybe you want to start to eat better and live healthier. Maybe you want to leave a smaller footprint on this earth, a better legacy for our children. Maybe you've decided to do something about it.

The Meatrix - The Global Resources Action Center for the Eenvironment’s (GRACE) critically-acclaimed, record-breaking flash animation film on the dangers of factory farming. The response to both the film and the guide was so overwhelming, and the feedback so supportive, that plans were immediately implemented to make the guide even more comprehensive and user-friendly.

Sustainable Table - Sustainable Table is a new way to learn about healthy foods for you and your family. Sustainable Table is a consumer campaign developed by the Global Resource Action Center for the Environment (GRACE). It was launched to help fill in the gaps in the sustainable food movement, and to help direct consumers to the leading organizations who are working on the issue. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by all the problems surrounding our food supply, Sustainable Table celebrates the joy of food and eating.

Eat Well Guide - Consumers looking to buy meat, poultry, dairy and eggs from sustainable family farmers can now turn to the Eat Well Guide, a free online directory officially sponsored by the Global Resource Action Center for the Environment (GRACE).

Slow Food - Recognizing that the enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to the pursuit of happiness, Slow Food U.S.A. is an educational organization dedicated to promoting stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production; reviving the kitchen and the table as the centers of pleasure, culture, and community; invigorating and proliferating regional, seasonal culinary traditions; creating a collaborative, ecologically-oriented, and virtuous globalization; and living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life.

National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture - The National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture, Inc. is dedicated to educating the public on the importance of a sustainable food and agriculture system that is economically viable, environmentally sound, socially just, and humane.

Food, Land, Population And The U.S. Economy - Most of the 183 countries of the world are now to some degree dependent on food imports. This report focuses on the interdependency of land, food, and population in the U.S. economy.

The Center for Food Safety - The Center for Food Safety (CFS) is a non-profit public interest and environmental advocacy membership organization established in 1997 by its sister organization, International Center for Technology Assessment, for the purpose of challenging harmful food production technologies and promoting sustainable alternatives. CFS combines multiple tools and strategies in pursuing its goals, including litigation and legal petitions for rulemaking, legal support for various sustainable agriculture and food safety constituencies, as well as public education, grassroots organizing and media outreach.

The Faces of Poverty - More than one billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day. Another 2.7 billion struggle to survive on less than two dollars per day. Poverty in the developing world, however, goes far beyond income poverty. It means having to walk more than one mile everyday simply to collect water and firewood.

Growing Green for Sustainable Food Systems - Growing Green is a two-year (2002-04) law, policy and regulatory reform project focused on sustainable food systems for southwestern British Columbia. Its goals are and to develop practical recommendations for law, policy and regulatory reform in strategic areas and to strengthen the capacity of voluntary sector organizations to contribute to agri-food policy development.

Organic Food and Global Sustainability - Organic food is defined by how it cannot be made instead of how it can be made. It must be grown without the use of sewer-sludge fertilizers, most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, genetic engineering, growth hormones, irradiation, and antibiotics.

Food Sustainability and Food Security - Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) is an association of 17 Christian denominations including Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox bodies across the state that work together for unity and justice. Through community ministry, public policy advocacy, theological education and dialogue and environmental ministry, EMO participates in the collective task of building a just and compassionate world for all people. We invite you to participate in this collaborative effort to create a world of possibility for all God's people in Oregon and beyond. They provide a guide that is an excellent resource for individuals, congregations and other organizations that are interested in participating in a local, sustainable, community-based food system.

Arizona’s Food Security, Safety and Sustainability: Weighing the Risks of Bioterrorism, Contamination, Drought, and Farmland Loss to Urban Growth - Food security and sustainability for Arizona’s rapidly growing human population are at an all time low. Despite the fact that food production remains Arizona’s largest industry, contributing roughly 4.5 billion dollars annually to the state’s coffers, Arizona’s prime food producing lands are increasingly imperiled.

Simple Living Institute - The Institute's mission is to scientifically research and develop working organic farms with effective soil, water, and wildlife conservation; to publish findings for the scientific and general community; and to provide cooperative education experiences empowering individuals and organizations as responsible stewards of their well-being and the environment.
