If communities are focused on changing their economy and doing it in a way that seeks equal consideration for modern society, economics, and nature (the three circle sustainable development model), then communities will follow the guidance of the community development triangle. According to this model the economy of a place is very closely linked to the stewardship of natural resources, environments, and people. Furthermore, in order to achieve a sound balance between economy and stewardship, there must be a strong foundation of community civic capacity upon which to enact identified actions. By becoming involved, citizens can help shape the future of their community in positive ways, and change will happen. This requires attainment of a civic critical mass (maximum community member participation), upon which to enact sustainable actions. In other words, a small number of the potential total participants from a community will not get the job of sustainable development done.

Union of Concerned Scientists– Citizens and Scientists for Environmental Solutions. UCS is an independent nonprofit alliance of more than 100,000 concerned citizens and scientists. We augment rigorous scientific analysis with innovative thinking and committed citizen advocacy to build a cleaner, healthier environment and a safer world.

Promoting Corporate Social Responsibility - As You Sow is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting corporate social responsibility. The organization’s mission is to: Promote progressive social and environmental policies at companies through the Corporate Social Responsibility Program. At CSRP, we represent the interests of socially concerned investors in dialogue with some of the largest and most prominent U.S. corporations.

Association for Women’s Rights in Development - The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an international membership organization connecting, informing and mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights. Our goal is to cause policy, institutional and individual change that will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere. We do this by facilitating ongoing debates on fundamental and provocative issues as well as by building the individual and organizational capacities of those working for women's empowerment and social justice.

Redefining Progress - Redefining Progress works with partners to change technology, influence the choices individuals make, and resolve pressing social and environmental issues. RP also adds to our partners’ efforts by pursuing systemic change in underlying economic, political, and social mechanisms.

Earth Trends: The Environmental Portal - EarthTrends is an online collection of information regarding the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world. Committed to the principle that accurate information drives responsible decisions by governments and individuals, EarthTrends offers the public a large breadth of statistical, graphic, and analytical data in easily accessible formats.

Population Communications International - Encourages people to make choices that lead to better health and sustainable development. PCI encourages people to make choices that lead to better health and sustainable development. Working with local partners worldwide, PCI produces carefully researched and culturally sensitive radio and television soap operas that combine the power of storytelling with the reach of broadcast media. Our programs address the societal factors that limit people's ability to make choices that will improve their health and educational prospects. These serial dramas motivate individuals to adopt new attitudes and behavior by modeling behaviors that promote family health, stable communities, and a sustainable environment.

The Apollo Alliance in support of good jobs and energy independence - The Apollo Alliance is building a broad coalition within the labor, environmental, business, urban, and faith communities in support of good jobs and energy independence. The Alliance is developing public education campaigns and communications strategies to link allies and build a national constituency for a bold, broad based, and immediate program of public policy.

Center for a New American Dream– The Center for a New American Dream helps Americans consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life, and promote social justice. The Center exists to create that positive impact. We work with individuals, institutions, communities, and businesses to conserve natural resources, counter the commercialization of our culture, and change the way goods are produced and consumed.

Context Institute - The Context Institute has explored how human society can become sustainable (i.e. able to meet the needs of the present without diminishing the prospects for the future), and has served as a catalyst for voluntary change toward a more humane and sustainable culture.

Citizen’s Network for Sustainable Development - The Citizens Network for Sustainable Development (CitNet) is an independent, non-profit network bringing together US based organizations, communities, and individuals working on sustainability issues across the US. CitNet works in the local, regional, and global arenas to make sustainable development a reality. By supporting citizen-led activities in development, monitoring and implementation of sustainability initiatives, promoting civil society participation in important policy fora, and connecting individuals and organizations, CitNet is helping build an ecologically sound and socially equitable and economically just world.

Tools for Change - Last-First Networks is a non-profit resource centre, dedicated to advancing effective community renewal and grassroots development. It achieves this by raising awareness of proven practical approaches to working with the poorest and marginal groups of any society, and by resourcing practitioners and organisations who work with these groups. Our geographical focus is Asia and the Pacific, but we source books from all over the world, and also deliver worldwide. The vision of Last-First Networks is the widespread adoption and use of knowledge, skills, attitudes and practices that promote self-reliance and self-esteem among the poorest and marginal groups of the world.

Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit - The Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit is an easy-to-use manual for individuals and organizations from both the education and community sectors. This resource addresses the potentially powerful alliance of school systems and communities working together to reach local sustainability goals. Together they can reorient existing curriculums to create locally relevant and culturally appropriate education.
